Generic medications are created to be the same as a brand-name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics, and intended use - just traditionally at a much lower cost. Recently, three new generics hit the market that may not be prescribed for a primary workers’ compensation injury or illness but might appear as a treatment option for comorbid conditions or presumptive claims.
For the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes
Two manufacturers (Apotex Corp on June 2, 2026, and Sandoz on May 26, 2026) recently announced the U.S. approval and launch of sitagliptin tablets and sitagliptin and metformin hydrochloride tablets for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes. These are generic medications to Merck’s Januvia® (sitagliptin) and Janumet® (sitagliptin and metformin), respectively.
Sitagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control. The combination product includes metformin to further lower blood glucose levels. The recommended dose of sitagliptin is 100 mg once daily, with adjustments based on kidney function.
Available Dosages:
Sitagliptin: 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets
Sitagliptin/metformin: 50 mg/500 mg and 50 mg/1000 mg tablets
For the treatment of multiple chronic inflammatory conditions
Also new to the market, two manufacturers (Hikma Pharmaceuticals on June 3, 2026, and Breckenridge Pharmaceutical on June 4, 2026) announced the launch of their respective versions of tofacitinib, a generic equivalent to Pfizer’s Xeljanz® for the treatment of multiple chronic inflammatory conditions. Hikma introduced tofacitinib oral solution 1mg/mL and Breckenridge launched tofacitinib tablets.
Tofacitinib tablets are indicated for adult patients who have moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), and ulcerative colitis (UC) and have had an inadequate response or intolerance to one or more tumor necrosis factor (TNF) blockers. Tofacitinib tablets and oral solution are also approved for pediatric patients two years of age and older with PsA or polyarticular course juvenile idiopathic arthritis under similar conditions.
Available Dosages:
Tablets: 5 mg and 10 mg
Oral solution: 1mg/mL
