At one time or another, most of us have waited in line at a pharmacy to pick up a prescription. In fact, the total number of retail prescriptions filled annually in the United States is expected to reach 4.98 billion in 2025.1 And while these billions of single prescriptions are written for individuals to treat an individual illness/injury, the prescription process and pharmacy management extends way beyond the pharmacy line. The prescription process is a group effort – a team sport that includes the coordinated efforts of:
- The patient who is responsible for taking their medication as prescribed and reporting any issues/side effects that may occur.
- The prescriber who is responsible for selecting the medication appropriate for the illness/injury that is also on formulary.
- The pharmacist, the medication expert, who is responsible for confirming the medication does not negatively interact or duplicate the patient’s current medications and is safe for their use.
- In workers’ compensation claims we also have the payer who covers the cost of the work-related injury medications and helps to establish a pharmacy program and an appropriate level of coverage based on their employee population and industry.
- Rounding out the roster is the pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) with the oversight and responsibility to help the other team members practice and follow good pharmacy management and ensure patient safety for the benefit of all.
